Watermelon is a significant product in Turkish agriculture. Annual global production of the fruit is in the region of 39.7 million tons and Turkey is the second largest producer after China with 3.9 million tons/year – 10% of worldwide output. The Adana Province accounts for 20% of domestic production. Watermelon cultivation in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey focuses on early maturing varieties. The sugar content of watermelon ranges between 8 to 14%.

Crimson Sweet

This is the most common watermelon variety grown in Turkey. The fruit is oval shaped, the exterior is light green with dark green stripes. Average unit weight is between 5 to 10 kg. This variety is suitable for transport and storage. Crimson Sweet has small dark seeds and has a very high sugar content.

Black Diamond

This watermelon variety ,which has been cultivated by the producers on the increasing demands in recent years, is a medium early variety. Its greatest feature is that it is seedless with a high sugar content as well as long shelf life with a crispy eating quality. The black diamond type watermelon has dark green skin with a flesh of dark red color. This variety which has excellent fruit is also very resistant to sunburn.

Sugar Baby

Because of the changes in export market and new request from exporters has let turkish growers to produce new varieties. And mini watermelon which is also known as sugar baby is one of them. Shape is round to slightly oblong and Its about size of cantaloupe or up to 4 kilos. Flavor is sweet with a classic watermelon flavor and flesh is deep pink to deep red,crispy and juicy.
