ONION

Botanically, onions belong to the Alliaceae family, in the genus, Allium and known scientifically as: Allium cepa.
Onion is a small herb plant that grows to about 2 feet tall. Its underground globular bulb is actually a stem which consists of modified leaves arranged in whorls. There are many cultivar varieties of onions grown around the world. On an average, its crop takes about three to four months from seedlings to harvest. Top greens or scallions and flower heads are also eaten all around the world.

These are the most common onions and are available all year round. They are strongly flavoured, firm onions with layers of golden brown paper skins and white flesh. Generally used for cooking rather than eaten raw. The most common varieties are Aki and Banko

Red onions have burgundy red skins and red tinged flesh. It has 2 main different variety depanding to taste. One is spicy, the other one is more sweet and juicy.

White onions tend to be more pungent than brown onions and have white papery skin. They can be used in place of other onions in savoury dishes or finely chopped and served raw in salads and salsas.
